The British Parliament has rejected efforts to tighten the limits on legal abortion, leaving intact the existing policy that allows abortion on demand through the first 24 weeks of pregnancy.

The United Kingdom's House of Commons on Tuesday voted to maintain the country's law allowing abortions during the first 24 weeks of pregnancy, Reuters reporters. Lawmakers "passionately debated" for three hours proposals that would have lowered the time limit for legal abortions (Baldwin, Reuters, 5/20).

Ohio Right to Life on Tuesday filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court seeking a permanent or temporary injunction against a state ban on issue advertisements that mention the names of political candidates within 30 days of an election that are sponsored by unions, not-for-profit organizations or corporations, the AP/Akron Beacon Journal reports.

Bangladesh said on Thursday a child infected with bird flu, the country's first reported human case of the virus, had recovered. "The child was found infected by H5N1 but after treatment he has recovered and is now doing well," Mahmudur Rahman, director of the Dhaka-based Institute of Epidemiology and Disease Control and Research, told Reuters. He said the case was detected recently during a routine check-up, but did not give details.

But experts said the overall risk was relatively small and more research was needed to confirm patches are safer. HRT is regularly prescribed to women suffering from the effects of the menopause.
