Iowa researchers have identified a protein that makes common food borne bacteria resistant to antibiotics. The team led by Dr. Qijing Zhang has found Mfd, a protein involved in DNA transcription and repair that plays an important role in the development of fluoroquinolone antibiotic resistance in Campylobacter, a bacterial pathogen associated with food poisoning in humans.

Washington, June 7 : A new study has revealed that an intensive therapeutic strategy targeting blood sugar to near-normal levels does not reduce heart attack or stroke risk, but increases risk of death, compared to standard treatment. The researchers from Action to Control Cardiovascular Risk in Diabetes (ACCORD) evaluated the effects of intensively targeting blood sugar control among adults with type 2 diabetes, high blood sugar levels, and pre-existing heart disease or at least two cardiovascular disease risk factors in addition to diabetes.

"We found that when people walk in flip-flops, they alter their gait, which can result in problems and pain from the foot up into the hips and lower back," said Justin Shroyer, a biomechanics doctoral student.

Researchers have developed a new modified muscle flap technique, which can help in further reduction of pain and quicken recovery in patients after lung surgery.
With the help of this technique, UAB Chief of Thoracic Surgery Dr Robert J. Cerfolio, instead of crushing the intercostal muscle and nerve that lies between the ribs during rib spreading, teased the muscle and nerve away from the rib and then moved it out of the way before spreading the ribs.
